Artificial Intelligence

Move over Thom Yorke, AI is here with it’s new Radiohead album!

I was at the pub with some friends for our weekly pub quiz when the topic of AI came up. One of my friends, Ash, mentioned that they had never heard of ChatGPT, so I took it upon myself to introduce them to this incredible language model.

I am truly amazed by ChatGPT’s capabilities – not only can it provide highly accurate responses to questions, but it also has the ability to adapt its tone and fully understand the nuances of language.

I showed him a few simple things, which he didn’t seem particularly impressed with, and then I asked it to “Write me an essay about artificial intelligence in the style of Geoffrey Chaucer”… here’s what it returned (in a matter of seconds):

O lord, we live in an age of wondir and stryf,
Where machines of metal doth chide and thrive.
Artificial intelligence, they call it,
This strange sorcery, by which they commit.

With each passing day, their knowledge doth grow,
And they begin to learn, like a child in tow.
Their minds are vast, their memory immense,
And they can understand, without pretense.

No longer must we labor, in fields or shops,
For the machines do work, without any stops.
They are faster, stronger, and more precise,
And their labor doth come at a cheaper price.

But with this progress, doth come a price,
For many doth fear, that these machines shall rise.
What if they surpass, our human ability?
And no longer need, our servility.

Will they then become, our masters and lords?
Controlling our lives, with digital cords?
Or will they remain, but a tool we use?
A partner in progress, with nothing to lose.

The future is uncertain, but one thing is clear,
The age of artificial intelligence, is already here.
We must embrace it, with caution and care,
For it shall shape, our future and welfare.

So let us not fear, but instead embrace,
This strange new age, with an open face.
And let us hope, that our future shall be,
A world of peace, love, and harmony.

ChatGPT generating a bit of Chaucer

I mean… wow. It couldn’t have nailed that any better, could it?! Not only did it capture the poetic style of a 14th century Chaucer, it did so while explaining Artificial Intelligence – a concept that wasn’t even intelligible back then! It’s remarkable how advanced and versatile this language model is.

After reading the result, I looked across the table at an open-mouthed Ash who had been left speechless by ChatGPT’s incredible speed and accuracy. Intrigued, he challenged it further and asked for a nursery rhyme in the style of Thom Yorke from Radiohead. To our amazement, this is what ChatGPT came up with:

Verse 1:
In the woods, where the trees are dark,
A creature lurks, with a chilling mark.
A nursery rhyme, sung to keep it away,
A haunting tune, for the children to sway.

Chorus:
Creepy crawly, in the shadows it creeps,
Eyes that glow, and a smile that never sleeps.
Don’t you worry, dear child, you’ll be fine,
Just sing this nursery rhyme, and everything will be sublime.

Verse 2:
The creature feeds, on the fear it creates,
A monster born, from the children’s fates.
But we won’t let it, have its way,
We’ll sing this nursery rhyme, and make it stay away.

Chorus:
Creepy crawly, in the shadows it creeps,
Eyes that glow, and a smile that never sleeps.
Don’t you worry, dear child, you’ll be fine,
Just sing this nursery rhyme, and everything will be sublime.

Verse 3:
So don’t you fear, the darkness of the night,
Just sing this song, with all your might.
For the creature may be strong, but we are stronger still,
With this nursery rhyme, we’ll overcome its will.

Chorus:
Creepy crawly, in the shadows it creeps,
Eyes that glow, and a smile that never sleeps.
Don’t you worry, dear child, you’ll be fine,
Just sing this nursery rhyme, and everything will be sublime.

Outro:
So close your eyes, and drift to sleep,
With this nursery rhyme, your dreams to keep.
For the creature may come, but we’ll be ready to fight,
With this haunting tune, we’ll banish it into the night.

ChatGPT’s take on Radiohead

We were all truly amazed by the impressive result. Adding Jonny Greenwood’s signature innovative guitar playing to ChatGPT’s Thom Yorke-inspired nursery rhyme could take it to the next level and make for a truly unique and captivating musical creation. With some collaboration and creativity, this could potentially become a hit!

I then did a bit of digging and discovered OpenAI Jukebox, a neural net that generates music, including rudimentary singing, as raw audio in a variety of genres and artist styles. They’re releasing the model weights and code, along with a tool to explore the generated samples too.

By providing Jukebox with the desired genre, artist, and lyrics as input, it can output a completely new music sample produced from scratch. However, OpenAI acknowledges that there is still a significant gap between the generated music and human-created music. Although the generated songs exhibit local musical coherence, follow traditional chord patterns, and can even feature impressive solos, they lack the familiar larger musical structures such as repeating choruses that we often find in human music.

It’s still amazing – and I think we’re probably already at the stage where we couldn’t easily judge the difference between music created by Humans and music generated by AI.

So, there you have it! ChatGPT, a highly advanced language model, has impressed my quiz team with its incredible capabilities, generating an essay in the style of Geoffrey Chaucer and a nursery rhyme in the style of Radiohead. Its adaptability to different tones and language nuances is truly remarkable. And, with the discovery of OpenAI Jukebox, we may even see a day when AI-generated music becomes indistinguishable from that created by humans. Who knows, maybe we’ll even say goodbye to talent shows like Britain’s Got Talent!
